Search Sherman Criminal Dockets

Charges filed in Sherman County, Kansas land in one of two places, so start there. The Clerk of the District Court holds state cases. Municipal court handles city ordinance matters. A Sherman County criminal docket search works best once you know which court the citation or notice names. The state portal or the right clerk will then get you the entries. What you see online is an events index, not the full case file, and an empty result never proves a case is absent.

Sherman County Criminal Number Change

Case numbers in Sherman County changed with the Odyssey transition on July 11, 2022. Smart Search's official help material shows the older style, like 2019CR25, beside the county-prefixed form, RL2019CR25. Punctuation and spacing count. One format drawing a blank? Try the other through the help control, matching the format to the filing date.

A format mismatch proves nothing about the case. Older documents may sit only on the courthouse terminal. When the portal will not resolve a number, give the Sherman County clerk the filing year, the party name, and any number printed on a notice.

Inside a Sherman County Criminal Docket

Under Kansas Supreme Court Rule 21, the docket is an events index, or register of actions. It lists filings, actions, and events in order for court administration. The header plus the event list can identify a public case, though neither hands you every filed document.

HeaderCase number, criminal case type, Sherman location, filing date, status, and assigned judicial officer.
ParticipantsPublic party roles, counsel roles, and prosecuting-party labels.
EventsChronological descriptions of filings, hearings, actions, orders, and disposition entries.
SettingsFuture hearing date, time, courtroom or location, and judicial officer when public.
DocumentsA title, public image link, or restriction notice; an entry is not the document itself.

Read the newest event next to the overall status. A hearing setting is just a setting, not a result. Document titles hide their full terms. An administrative update may leave the disposition untouched. Codes or conflicts that touch a deadline belong with the clerk.

Sherman County Criminal Docket Numbers

The Kansas Judicial Branch Criminal Filings 2024 report runs through June 30, 2024. Sherman County logged 154 felony filings and 128 misdemeanor filings. That is 282 criminal filings in all. Pending cases: 85 felonies, with 32.9 percent older than twelve months, and 72 misdemeanors, with 48.6 percent past that mark.

154Felony filings
128Misdemeanor filings
282Total filings

Treat these numbers as a workload snapshot at one reporting point. They are not a daily docket, a party list, or a forecast for any one case. For scale, the 15th Judicial District reported 697 total criminal filings across its seven counties in the period, placing Sherman County inside a regional court system.

How a Sherman Criminal Case Moves

A Sherman County criminal events index often opens with a complaint or information. From there it may log a bond event or first appearance. Arraignment, a plea, motions, and pretrial settings can follow. Cases that move forward add trial and a verdict or another disposition. Then come sentencing, probation or review events, costs, restitution, and an appeal entry. Not every case hits every step.

Docket flow: Charge Filed › Arraignment › Pretrial › Plea or Trial › Disposition › Sentencing

Past events and future settings call for different reading. A continuance shifts a hearing date. It does not dismiss anything. A plea entry is not sentencing. For a date that controls attendance, check Smart Search against the official Kansas Hearing Calendar, then confirm anything uncertain with the clerk.

Sherman County Criminal Docket Terms

Event labels only make sense in sequence. Read the date, the type, the judge, and any linked public order before you conclude anything.

Complaint or information
The charging document that starts or states the prosecution.
Arraignment
A court event at which the charge is addressed and a plea may be entered.
Pretrial setting
A scheduled step used to manage issues before a plea or trial.
Disposition
The recorded result of the charge or case, which may require a separate order for full terms.
Sentencing
The stage at which the court imposes the judgment after a qualifying disposition.

Financial and supervision entries often trail the main disposition. Never stretch a public label past what the court record actually states.

Sherman Courts That Hold Criminal Dockets

State felony and misdemeanor complaints filed in Sherman County go to Sherman County District Court. That court is part of the 15th Judicial District. It serves as the general trial court and court of record. The Clerk of the District Court keeps its criminal events indexes and case files. Do not confuse that office with the Sherman County Clerk, who handles county-government records.

Goodland Municipal Court takes city ordinance, traffic, and limited city-code matters. Per its official page, felony charges and most juvenile incidents belong to Sherman County District Court instead. For a city matter, reach Goodland Municipal Court at 204 W. 11th Street or 785-890-4574. Kanorado keeps municipal-court and traffic chapters in its city code, but the city posts no online docket. Its city office is the starting route. Federal criminal cases live in PACER or District of Kansas CM/ECF, not Kansas Smart Search.

When Sherman Criminal Search Finds Nothing

A blank screen on the Sherman County criminal search does not mean the case is invisible. Often the number was typed in the wrong format. Older matters may predate the Odyssey material that appears online. City court cases never show up here, because they belong to a municipal docket instead. Portals also go down now and then. One more wall exists. Kansas Rule 22 keeps certain case types and records offline, including grand-jury material, some juvenile matters, specified warrant records, and anything expunged or sealed.

Do not treat a blank result as a clean-record finding. Ask the proper clerk whether a public search route, older-file process, or access rule applies.

A kiosk sits at the courthouse. It can surface public material missing from the web. A sealed case stays sealed, though. Goodland and Kanorado city court matters must go through that municipal route. For a federal caption, turn to the PACER Case Locator.

Sherman Criminal Docket Access

Access to a Sherman County court docket sits on two legal layers. The Kansas Open Records Act states a policy favoring disclosure. Kansas Supreme Court Rules 20 through 25 govern judicial records and set the electronic-access limits. Rule 22 lists the records and case types. They are kept from public view online or at a terminal. Rule 123 puts a duty on parties. They must protect confidential data. So one case header can be public while a document inside the file stays restricted.

Key rules:

Kansas Supreme Court Rule 22 sets public electronic access and lists excluded case records.

Kansas Supreme Court Rule 123 governs confidential-information cover sheets and redaction.

K.S.A. 45-218 addresses inspection, responses, denials, and lawful fees.

When part of a file is protected, ask the clerk for the segregable public portion. The clerk may explain the process an authorized party can use. What the clerk cannot do is disclose confidential names, addresses, juvenile facts, or sealed content.

Sherman Criminal Docket Copy Route

For copies, go to the Sherman County Clerk of the District Court. A public complaint, journal entry, order, or certified disposition from the district case file can be requested there. Describe the case by number, title, and approximate date. The 15th Judicial District accepts requests by mail, hand delivery, email, or its Kansas court-record request form. KORA gives the office until the end of the third business day to act. It must either produce records or explain a delay and its status.

Viewing public records at the clerk office is free. Copies of verified charges from the case file run $0.25 per page. Certification adds $10 per document. Staff time is billed at $20 per hour for clerical work and $60 per hour for professional work, in quarter-hour increments. Payment comes before release, and outside costs can apply. Note the boundary here: this route covers case records only. A criminal-history report is a different state product, not a Sherman County court docket. Confusing the two will slow you down.
